So, what's the usual number of cancelled concerts? And when would they cancel normally?

Just asking out of curiosity :)

Usually a couple of artists will cancel. Before the festival start and sometimes even during the festival. It is bound to happen, when the programme is comprised of +150 bands.
Which year has the the record/biggest amount of cancellations? Maybe 2000?Damn so many bands cancelled...

No idea (yet). In 2000 my mind wasn't all there, so I don't recall anything but the major cancellations, and still haven't sorted that year out (since most media didn't really bother commenting on cancellations either).

Other than that special case, 1998 had quite a few... Marilyn Manson, Echo and the Bunnymen, Fu Manchu, Finley Quaye, The Verve. Quite happy with many of those, especially Misfits replacing Marilyn Manson.

And the fun of the newspaper announcing that "the German underground sextet" Rammstein would be moved to Orange to replace The Verve.
Over the last few years, the only acts I can recall being cancelled were ones that shouldn't have been playing at a festival in the first place (Mika in 2007 and Lil Wayne in 2009). Goldfrapp cancelled at the very last minute in 2006 which was a shame.
David Bowie cancelled in 2004
Damion Jr. Gong Marley in 2006
Slayer in 2007
Adele in 2008
Didnt M.I.A and The Cult cancel in 2008?

Yep.
Both Eagles of Death Metal and Cold War Kids cancelled in 2007 as I recall...

True – although EoDM claimed to never have been contacted about the gig in the first place :-D
The first thing they heard of it was that it was cancelled. Every year, there's also always a handful of smaller acts that cancel. Last year it was Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens and Narasirato Pan Pipers AFAIR.

OT: AFAIR those were both cancelled as a result of rejected visa applications ?
(stupid Danish laws :P )

I am not sure, but I think Naomi Shelton's entire EU tour got cancelled. With Narasirato, I think the reason was that the band kinda fell apart during their Australian tour. The aussie sheilas simply couldn't resist those yummy islanders greased up in coconut oil, and as the tour progressed, the members went awol one by one. Or so the story goes. If true, that's kinda rock'n'roll...
ROB ZOMBIE'S FACEBOOK: "Once more. I am sorry to say all shows after June 26th had to be canceled. It is not because I am sick, it is not because we don't like you, it is not because of any of the rumors.
Things have taken place that made us have to return to the US after the 26th. We hate canceling and feel bad about this. It is a total drag on every level. We were looking forward to all these shows, will return and make it up to you"

I have just posted this on Roskilde's facebook-page. Waiting to hear what they have to say, but this might be the first cancellation this year. Total bummer!!!
1990: sinead o'connor

1995: Live

1996: Mazzy star, garbage, Foo Fighters, Manics & Edwin Collins

1998: Morrissey, Song Island, A Tribe Called Quest and Kylie Minogue

1999: Culture Club

2001: Coldplay, Guns N' Roses, Barenaked ladies

2002: The Dirtbombs
Just necromancing this thread, because here are some (probably far from complete) stats - a "top 7". Acts cancelled before or during the festival (only bands actually announced - there have been plenty of rumours about bands cancelling before they were even announced):

1996: 9/10 cancellations: Foo Fighters, Mazzy Star, Garbage, Edwyn Collins, Passion Orange, Genius/GZA, Lord Finesse, Spain, Manic Street Preachers, Billy Bragg (either had two performances, one of which - on White - was cancelled - or he was moved to Orange at a later time)
2004: 9 cancellations: Sage Francis, Savath & Savalas + Prefuse 73, Syntax, Lyrics Born, Lady Saw, LFO, David Bowie, Billy Talent, Boom Bip
2000: 9 cancellations: The Cure, Stratovarius, Romanthony, Pet Shop Boys, Oasis, Live, Filter, B.T., Beanfield
2001: 8/9 cancellations: Barenaked Ladies, Artful Dodger, Coldplay, Guns N' Roses, Jurassic 5, Messaoud Bellemou, Mos Def, Manic Street Preachers, Danko Jones (they did appear the day after - and are also a special case because they were booked as a replacement for JJ72 - who were moved to replace Jurassic 5 - but then couldn't make it to Roskilde in time).
2007: 7 cancellations: Cold War Kids, Explosions in the Sky, Eagles of Death Metal, Mika, Kasai Allstars, Slayer, Various Production
1998: 7 cancellations: Kylie Minogue, Marilyn Manson, Finley Quaye, Fu Manchu, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Verve, A Tribe Called Quest
2006: 6 cancellations: Pharoahe Monch, Skin, Goldfrapp, Damian Jr. Gong Marley, Coheed and Cambria, Floetry

The early days are much harder to research, so there may be more cancellations back then. The "worst" year in the 70's/80's is, at the moment, 1974 (Captain Beefheart, Henry Cow, Tempest + 2 more that haven't been double checked).

In case anyone wants to have a go and help the "history project", here is the current "complete" list of 131 cancelled concerts through the years that I know of. At least 74 of them cancelled after the concert schedule was released. Still haven't double-confirmed Song Island or Morrissey in 1998. Senser also supposedly cancelled in 1994, although they're listed in the official history.

And yeah, Drake, Tom Zé, and The Replacements all bear the distinction of being booked twice and having cancelled both times. Rumour still has it that The Replacements actually managed to do it three times. But haven't confirmed that either.
