What is your best soul song of all time?

Mine is "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke. He used to make music looking to cross over and sell to white America, and being very successfull.

After hearing Bod Dylans "Blowing In The Wind" Sam Cooke decided to make a political song- from the black people's point of view.

One of the few songs that, whenever I hear it, I feel sad but in a good way if you know what I mean.

He only performed it live less than 5 times- after having been told the song sounds like death coming.

I just think it is beautiful, the arrangements with the strings, his voice and the lyrics.

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go downtown somebody keep telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knockin' me
Back down on my knees

Ohhhhhhhhh.....

There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

_____

And the best reggae version I have heard so far:

I think the soul that derided from gospel music, like this example, is some of the cooolest music around :)

The last two I have never heard before. But I will listen a lot to them from now on. Cheers!

I'm a giant fan of soulmusic. Of course it's was done best in 60's and 70's. But the Lee Fields album from this year is amazing.Every track is pure gold.

Yeah, Lee Fields is great and to be fair he does it like it was done in the past.

"Let Me Down Easy" is right up there amongst the finest ever. There's so many versions, but Lavette's is the best I've heard.
