I had actually decided to give up on this thread, but then these guys comes along with some totally awesome music. They are not to be missed and I had to make sure that those who reads this gets of taste of what to come (debut album out in a few weeks)

Think Rival Sons mixed with Wolfmother and The Black Crowes with some killer songs. (Admittedly I've only heard a few).

This one is a rock classic already as far as I am concerned!

I agree. I predict great things for this band. It is so nice to see real rock n' roll coming back these days.

Scorpion Child – Self Titled – CD Review

Score 4,5/5

Release Date: 21 June 2013
Review by Gian Archer

SCORPION CHILD joins the current trend of bands reviving the hard rock and heavy metal of the 70’s. Bands like THE ANSWER, GRAVEYARD, GHOST, UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS, RIVAL SONS, WITCHCRAFT, THE SWORD, PURSON, etc. are all adding their own twist to the timeless sounds which continue to influence so much of what we hear today. For people like me who were fortunate enough to have parents with great musical tastes (I was born much too late to enjoy it as it was released), it’s fantastic to hear new bands creating such great new music.

The easiest comparison to make for SCORPION CHILD would definitely be LED ZEPPELIN. With their blues influenced heavy psych-rock, and Aryn Jonathan Black’s Robert Plant like vocals, they are an extension of their influences, but not an imitation. They are accomplished songwriters and for a debut album, SCORPION CHILD has assembled a cornucopia of great rock songs.

While ‘Kings Highway’ is a great opening track for an album, you can't go past ‘Polygon Of Eyes’ as an introduction to this band. Massive riffs, John Bonham-esque drumming and a giant chorus. I've listened to this song almost every day since seeing it on Nuclear Blast’s YouTube channel. It’s this track that had me eagerly awaiting the whole album.

The track listing is well set out, with the faster tracks interspersed throughout the album, and while I am happy with the order, if I was to introduce a new listener to this band, ‘Paradigm’ would be the next I suggest they listen to. This is easily my favourite track on the album, with some of the fastest hard rock riffs on the album and one part 2:30 in where the melody line follows the guitars in a way which sounds fantastic. As a part of the album, this track is perfectly placed as it is followed by ‘Red Blood (The River Flows)’, a great prog-ballad opening with acoustic guitars and progressing into huge soaring melodies and a massive wall of sound.

While I’ve mostly focused on the two tracks which show off SCORPION CHILD’s hard rock chops, I don’t want to ignore the rest of the album. The vocals over the verses of ‘The Secret Spot’ are a great example of how well Aryn Jonathan Black’s voice is used throughout this album. A lesser singer would be found out very quickly. The guitars are used to great effect throughout ‘Liquor’ and Shawn Alvear provides some very solid drumming throughout, the production allowing the rhythm section to sound crisp amongst the guitars and vocals.

SCORPION CHILD’s self titled debut album is a great example of a band doing something new with such classic sounds. Do yourself a favour and check them out.

It´s probably not gonna happen. Roskilde seems to be totally oblivious to rockmusic, if it
doesn´t have that indie or hardcore/metalcore touch. Great players and performers that actually rock out with their cock out aren´t booked. Bands like these are so unfashionable, that they don´t appeal to the hipsters.

Don´t expect to see these bands either:

You think any of these swedish bands would be willing to play Roskilde cheap? ;-)
